We are constantly being reminded that our beloved NHS is the envy of the world. This is not the reality. We used to underfund our healthcare when compared with the systems used by many comparable Countries.

This is no longer the case. We spend similar sums per capita, BUT, and it is a crucial but, our waiting lists, facilities and health outcomes are way down the league tables leaving us with relatively low quality healthcare.

Tax payers get terrible value from pharmaceutical companies.

Government imposed targets distort clinical priorities and require additional admin personnel just to manage data collection and reporting. Per NHS bed we have more admin staff than clinical staff.

We will reopen nursing and midwifery professions to recruitment without a degree requirement as well as a new social care nursing qualification.

The concept of the NHS is sound, “free at the point of use” is a valuable tenet going forwards and it is the one part of the NHS that we need to defend and protect along with the hundreds of thousands of hard working, dedicated Doctors, Nurses & support staff.

The rest of the NHS is in desperate need of reform. We have less beds today than we had at the start of Covid19. We have more administrators per bed than clinical care staff. It is insane when you examine the staff ratios and goes some way to explain why it costs so much to deliver barely average healthcare.

In 1988 we had a population of 56 million and 299,000 hospital beds. By 2021 the population had increased to 68 million but we had more than halved our bed capacity to 141,000. While sinking countless tens of billions more into the bottomless money pit.

Discussing the failings of the NHS has become a taboo subject, tantermount to heresy in some circles. However, it needs to be discussed, reviewed and reformed to provide not only outstanding healthcare, but also value for money. It is not FREE healthcare. We all pay and pay a lot for a mediocre healthcare services.

We need an NHS that is fit for purpose. Tinkering around the edges hasn’t worked. Employing diversity managers hasn’t worked. The solution is to re-imagine our healthcare and then rebuild it so that it works for everyone.

For the money we spend on healthcare we should have the worlds best health outcomes. This is not the case. There are many examples of countries delivering better health outcomes with less money. We need to be bold. We need to be brave.

Our aim is to transform the NHS into the worlds leading healthcare service that we can be truely proud of. No other country on earth has adopted our healthcare provision model. If it was as good as we are told, surely it would have been copied across the world?

We are tied into incredibly expensive PFI contracts set up by the Labour Government. These were signed just to manipulate Government figures. Having promised not to increase public borrowing, they instead promised to pay private companies to build and run hospital buildings. This means that instead of the Government paying £1 Billion to build a new hospital, PFI contracts that will end up costing us £12 Billion + were signed.

Across the last few decades, successive Governments have thrown public money around like confetti. We need to get to grip with our finances as a priority and cut future waste.
